Lost Wages Supplemental Payment Assistance (LWA)
Topics

Ohio has been approved to distribute weekly $300 Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) payments to eligible individuals who were fully or partially unemployed, or working reduced hours under a SharedWork Ohio plan, because of COVID-19 for weeks ending August 1 through September 5, 2020.

LWA was made possible by an executive memorandum issued on August 8, 2020. The program provides grants to participating states to use Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to provide supplemental assistance to individuals who are partially or totally unemployed because of COVID-19.

Update for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Claimants:

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) claimants began receiving retroactive LWA payments the week of September 14, 2020. For PUA claimants, LWA is being distributed in individual $300 payments (less taxes) over a period of six days ending on September 21, for all weeks they qualify, up to $1,800.

Update for Traditional Unemployment, Trade, SharedWorkOhio and Extended-Benefit Claimants:

The system programming necessary to issue LWA payments is now complete. If you received benefits for one or more of the applicable weeks, you must complete the following steps to verify that you are eligible for LWA:

  1. Log into your existing unemployment account at unemployment.ohio.gov. If you need assistance, please call 1-877-644-6562 (1-877-OHIO-JOB), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. If you call, please be sure to have paper and a pencil ready.
  2. Under "Claim Details," click on "COVID-19 Lost Wages Assistance Certification."
  3. Answer "yes" or "no" to this question: "During the week ending August 1 or any week since then, have you been fully or partially unemployed, or had a reduction in hours under a SharedWork Ohio plan, due to COVID-19?"
  4. Certify that you are answering truthfully and honestly and that you understand there may be penalties for a fraudulent response.

You must do this only once (not weekly).

Eligible claimants will receive one retroactive LWA payment for all weeks that they qualify, up to $1,800. Note that if you chose for your taxes to be withheld from your weekly unemployment payments, taxes also will be withheld from your LWA payments.
