The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in March was 218,000, down from 224,000 in February. The number of unemployed has decreased by 8,000 in the past 12 months from 226,000. The March unemployment rate for Ohio decreased 0.1% from 3.9% in March 2022.
The U.S. unemployment rate for March 2023 was 3.5%, down from 3.6% in February 2023, and down from 3.6% in March 2022.
In March 2023, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 61.5%, up from 61.4% in February 2023 and down from 61.7% in March 2022. During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.6%, up from 62.5% in February 2023 and up from 62.4% in March 2022.

Establishment Survey Data
Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 10,600 over the month, from a revised 5,579,100 in February to 5,589,700 in March, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS).
Employment in goods-producing industries, at 938,100, increased 2,300 as gains in manufacturing (+4,200) surpassed losses in construction (-1,800) and mining and logging (-100). The private service-providing sector, at 3,881,600, increased 7,200 as gains in private educational and health services (+4,200); professional and business services (+1,900); leisure and hospitality (+1,300); information (+300); and financial activities (+100) exceeded losses in other services (-400) and trade, transportation, and utilities (-200). Government employment, at 770,000, increased 1,100 as gains in local (+1,000) and federal (+500) government outpaced losses in state government
(-400).
From March 2022 to March 2023, nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 82,800. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 16,600. Manufacturing added 11,000 jobs in durable goods (+10,500) and nondurable goods (+500). Construction added 5,300 jobs and mining and logging gained 300 jobs. Employment in the private service-providing sector increased 58,000 as gains in private educational and health services (+28,000); leisure and hospitality (+22,700); other services (+10,400); and financial activities (+4,900) surpassed losses in trade, transportation, and utilities (-5,800); professional and business services (-2,000); and information (-200). Government employment increased 8,200 with gains in local (+4,000); federal (+2,200); and state (+2,000) government.
