Household Survey Data
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in February was 224,000, down from 229,000 in January. The number of unemployed has decreased by 6,000 in the past 12 months from 230,000. The February unemployment rate for Ohio decreased 0.1% from 4.0% in February 2022.
The U.S. unemployment rate for February 2023 was 3.6%, up from 3.4% in January 2023, and down from 3.8% in February 2022.
In February 2023, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 61.4%, up from 61.2% in January 2023 and down from 61.6% in February 2022. During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.5%, up from 62.4% in January 2023 and up from 62.2% in February 2022.

Establishment Survey Data
Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 900 over the month, from a revised 5,574,600 in January to 5,575,500 in February, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS).
Employment in goods-producing industries, at 935,200, increased 1,100 as gains in construction (+1,200) and mining and logging (+200) exceeded losses in manufacturing (-300). The private service-providing sector, at 3,870,700, added 1,200 jobs. Gains in private educational and health services (+3,300); trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,800); financial activities (+1,200); leisure and hospitality (+1,100); other services (+600); and information (+100) surpassed losses in professional and business services (-6,900). Government employment, at 769,600, decreased 1,400 as losses in state (-2,100) and local (-400) government outweighed gains in federal government (+1,100).
From February 2022 to February 2023, nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 77,800. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 17,800. Manufacturing added 8,700 jobs. Gains in durable goods (+10,100) surpassed losses in nondurable goods (-1,400). Construction added 8,500 jobs and mining and logging gained 600 jobs. Employment in the private service-providing sector increased 53,600. Gains in private educational and health services (+25,400); leisure and hospitality (+24,000); other services (+10,300); and financial activities (+5,700) outpaced losses in professional and business services (-8,100); trade, transportation, and utilities
(-3,500); and information (-200). Government employment increased 6,400 with gains in state (+2,700); local
(+2,000); and federal (+1,700) government.
