The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in January was 229,000, down from 236,000 in December. The number of unemployed has decreased by 7,000 in the past 12 months from 236,000. The January unemployment rate for Ohio decreased 0.1% from 4.1% in January 2022.
The U.S. unemployment rate for January 2023 was 3.4%, down from 3.5% in December 2022, and down from 4.0% in January 2022.
In January 2023, the labor force participation rate in Ohio was 61.2%, unchanged from 61.2% in December 2022 and down from 61.4% in January 2022. During the same period, the national labor force participation rate was 62.4%, up from 62.3% in December 2022 and up from 62.2% in January 2022.

Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 14,800 over the month, from a revised 5,554,700 in December to 5,569,500 in January, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS).
Employment in goods-producing industries, at 936,500, increased 100 as gains in construction (+1,400) and mining and logging (+100) outpaced losses in manufacturing (-1,400). The private service-providing sector, at 3,866,100, added 12,500 jobs. Gains in professional and business services (+8,200); leisure and hospitality (+4,700); private educational and health services (+1,700); and other services (+1,400) exceeded losses in trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,700); financial activities (-1,100); and information (-700). Government employment, at 766,900, increased 2,200 with gains in local (+1,200); state (+800); and federal (+200) government.
From January 2022 to January 2023, nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 88,500. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 22,700. Manufacturing added 13,800 jobs in durable goods (+13,400) and nondurable goods (+400). Construction added 8,500 jobs and mining and logging gained 400 jobs. Employment in the private service-providing sector increased 61,900. Gains in leisure and hospitality (+26,800); private educational and health services (+21,100); other services (+9,400); and financial activities (+5,600) outweighed losses in professional and business services (-500); information (-300); and trade, transportation, and utilities
(-200). Government employment increased 3,900 with gains in local (+1,800); state (+1,600); and federal (+500) government.
