Veterans - Licensing & Certification
An Example of How Licensing and Certification Works

When a separating military veteran has been trained as a truck driver, they do not obtain the civilian Commercial Drivers License (CDL).  When entering the civilian labor market they are unable to practice the truck driving trade because they do not have the appropriate license.  The veteran must take the state written test, skills test and road test for CDL and must prove experience to be hired in the civilian world.  Many employers do not recognize military experience as experience for civilian jobs. ODJFS works with the Ohio Department of Public Safety to work with veterans to CDL license these veterans without extensive skills testing and retraining.  For the CDL you must complete an experience verification form (located at the Publications and Forms Page of this web site) to waive the skills testing.  The experience verification form must be completed prior to leaving the military or as soon after as possible.  In order to waive the skills testing the person must verify 100 hours of driving over the past two year period. This form must be completed within two years of separation from the military. Our Veteran Representative staff work with civilian employers to develop career opportunities for military trained veterans.  A civilian can pay $4,000.00 or more for truck driver training and spend several weeks of their time.  The military provides the training and experience necessary to succeed in the civilian labor force.
