FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   December 6, 2007

Unemployment Benefits to Increase in 2008

Maximum weekly benefit amounts for regular unemployment compensation claims will increase for new claims filed in Ohio on or after December 30, 2007 according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Weekly benefit amounts are set by state law at 50 percent of the applicant's average weekly wage, up to certain maximums which are determined by the number of eligible dependents. Maximum benefit amounts are adjusted each year based on the increase in the statewide average weekly wage for all workers covered by unemployment compensation. The increase in 2008 ranges from $10 - $14 per week according to the number of dependents claimed.

The maximum weekly benefit amounts for 2008 are: $365 for an individual with no dependents (up from $355); $443 for an individual with one or two dependents (up from $431); and $493 for an individual with three or more dependents (up from $479).
