| ODJFS Veterans' Specialist receives federal award
Ray Pryor, an ODJFS Disabled Veterans' Outreach Program Specialist in Waverly, was recently honored for his outstanding efforts in providing employment and training services to veterans. U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao presented an award to Pryor Nov. 13 in Washington, D.C.
"Ray has worked tirelessly to serve homeless veterans, veterans who need licenses and certifications, and veterans who need job assistance and other support services," said ODJFS Director Tom Hayes. "He is a outstanding asset to the veterans' community as well as ODJFS."
Pryor, who lives in Chillocothe, began his state career with the former Ohio Bureau of Employment Services in 1979. Among Pryor's accomplishments is the development of licensing and certification programs for veterans, which have led to job placements for well over 700 Ohio veterans. He has served in varying capacities to assist another 500 veterans.
He provided his expertise to the National Veterans' Training Institute helping them develop a training program on assessing veterans to receive civilian Licensure or certification in order to get civilian employment.
"Ray is a prime example of the things that can occur when there is cooperation and partnerships made with those who are not in the employment field," said Carl Price, Director of Veterans' Employment and Training Services for the U.S. Department of Labor. "Ray doesn't seek awards or recognition. He sees the job and does it."
Addressing the Labor Department's 22nd annual "Salute to Veterans" in Washington, D.C., Chao said veterans are a key component of the national strategy for building the workforce of the 21st Century. The salute featured a keynote address by Tom Ridge, advisor to the President for homeland security.
