LUCAS COUNTY FLOOD VICTIMS ELIGIBLE
FOR DISASTER UNEMPLOYMENT HELP
COLUMBUS - Governor Bob Taft announced today that Disaster Unemployment Assistance will be available to eligible individuals in Lucas County who have lost their jobs because of severe storms and flooding that began on July 29. The assistance is the result of Taft's filing a request for federal disaster relief with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
"I've seen firsthand the damage the severe weather and flooding did to the homes and quality of life for Lucas County residents," Taft said. "This assistance will help residents who have lost their jobs get back on their feet. I encourage all Lucas County residents to apply for assistance."
Persons who live or work in Lucas County and have lost their sources of income because of those disasters should apply for Disaster Assistance at any local Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS) office. Applicants should bring identification that includes their Social Security numbers, and, if possible, any papers showing the previous year's earnings and employment prior to the disaster (Form 1040 of tax year 1999). Unemployed individuals may file their applications by telephone toll-free at 1-877-644-6562.
Eligibility for benefits is broadened under Disaster Unemployment Assistance to include any individual who, as a direct result of the disaster: no longer has a job; is unable to reach his/her place of employment; was to have started new employment but could not; has become the major supporter for a household because the head of the household died in the disaster; or cannot work because of injury. Self-employed individuals and farmers who are not covered by unemployment insurance also could be eligible for the benefits.
Individuals who have any doubt about eligibility for assistance should apply for the federal benefits no later than Sept. 20, so all who are eligible can be assisted. Persons reporting to a local DJFS office can also obtain assistance in finding re-employment through testing, counseling and placement services.
