Ohio and U.S. Employment Situation (Seasonally Adjusted)

Ohio's unemployment rate was 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.

"Ohio's labor market continued to weaken in June," ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said. "Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11.1 percent."

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 662,000, up from 647,000 in May. The number of unemployed has increased by 279,000 in the past 12 months from 383,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was up from 6.4 percent in June 2008.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 9.5 percent, up from 9.4 percent in May.

Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)

Ohio's nonfarm payroll employment, at 5,100,200 in June, was down 33,000 from May, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by ODJFS.

Goods-producing industries fell 17,900 to 803,500. Losses in durable goods (-12,700) and nondurable goods (-2,700) lowered manufacturing 15,400. The workforce in construction declined 2,500. Mining and logging was little changed. Service-providing industries dropped 15,100 to 4,296,700. Most of the decrease occurred in government (-6,000) and professional and business services (-5,600). Employment was also down in leisure and hospitality (-2,900), other services ( 1,300), trade, transportation, and utilities (-800), and educational and health services (-100). Financial activities rose 1,100, while information added 500 jobs.

Over the past 12 months, nonagricultural wage and salary employment was down 279,000. Goods-producing industries had a loss of 164,400 jobs. Manufacturing fell 134,000 with reductions in durable goods (-109,200) and nondurable goods (-24,800). Construction dropped 30,300, while mining and logging slipped 100. Service-providing industries were down 114,600 from June 2008. The largest declines were in professional and business services (-57,500) and trade, transportation, and utilities (-39,700). Also down were government (-12,300), financial activities (-10,700), information (-5,600), and other services (-4,200). Employment was up in educational and health services (+13,800) and leisure and hospitality (+1,600).
